You are an intern at the CDC.  You have been asked to conceptualize an independent health services research study focused on HIV/AIDS-related illness among Hispanic Women living in California.
Choose and describe an aim or purpose for your study and the research question/hypothesis. Propose a study methodology, including population and sampling, sample size determination, measurement, data sources, and data collection methods and analysis.  Explain your choices.

Overview

Efforts to combat HIV on a global scale have led to significant reductions in both incidence and mortality rates. However, progress at the individual and community levels has been uneven (CDC, 2013b). This disparity is particularly evident among Hispanic women, who face numerous social determinants of health (SDH) challenges. Factors such as limited education, restricted employment opportunities, marginalization, financial dependence on male partners, gender power imbalances, and substance use contribute to their heightened vulnerability to HIV. Despite being disproportionately affected, Hispanic women often experience worse health outcomes compared to other individuals living with HIV (Sharpe et al., 2012; WHO, 2015).

Given these disparities, addressing inequitable SDH should be a priority in HIV prevention efforts targeting Hispanic women. Cultural factors play a significant role in shaping their risk for HIV and must be considered in intervention strategies. Many Hispanic women face barriers to HIV testing and healthcare access and often struggle to communicate openly or negotiate safer sex practices, such as condom use, with their partners.
